A Brief Look at our Church

The Johnson City Alliance Church began in 1979 as a ministry of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, whose offices are located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Arthur Joyce was the founding pastor. For four years the church met in the club room of the City Recreation Building on Legion Street in downtown Johnson City. It moved into the present building in February of 1983. The church is a part of the Southern District of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, whose offices are located in Birmingham, Alabama.

In 2011 A Decision to Build

Over the years between 1979 and 2010, the church experienced the kind of growth that many churches experience. There were those times of ups and downs, people moving out and people moving in, encouragement and discouragement, and a recognition that the church did not belong to us, but rather it belonged to our Lord Jesus Christ. And, as His Church, He could do whatever He pleased to do with it.

The congregation dropped to around 50 people or less as various ones made the decision to worship elsewhere. It was a blow to the church that had great consequence because it became even more obvious that we must keep looking to Jesus and seek Him in ways where He would be exalted. We realized that we were not to build a monument to ourselves, but were simply to be obedient to the vision that God gave us when He brought this local church into existence.

A call was given to the congregation to earnestly pray and to pray specifically for God's anointing and power to accomplish His will in specific areas. And, God began to answer those prayers as the congregation demonstrated their willingness to let God be God and to cling to Him no matter what. Slowly but surely, God brought various families to the church who were also willing for God's Spirit to be revealed through the church, and to participate in obedience to the commands of Christ as He gave direction. And over several years, the comment was increasingly heard, "We've been searching for a church that would be true to the Word and be family friendly with an emphasis upon living the Christian life according to the Scriptures."

The church saw new families come and identify with the congregation, and soon discovered a growing need for additional educational space. Currently running around 140 people on a Sunday morning, various ideas were put forth in an effort to deal with that "good problem" that we were having. A short-term solution was found by a willingness on the part of the Boy Scouts Regional offices, located immediately next door to the church, to allow an adult Sunday School class to meet weekly in their facility until we were able to determine a course of action.

That course of action was finally arrived at around the end of summer of 2011. A decision was made to build an addition to the church on as much of a cash basis as possible. An architect was hired, plans were drawn, and bids were requested. And, in January of 2012 the final decision to build the addition was reached and the work began.

A Facelift in Progress

Work is in progress on the building and will give to the church building an expanded sanctuary, three additional classrooms, larger offices, a much needed expanded ladies' room, a larger kitchen, and a greatly expanded foyer. The building process is expected to be completed by the end of August, 2012. You are invited to come and see the expansion. But most importantly, you are invited to come and worship a great and awesome God who delights in giving to His people and surprising them with His blessings!

Missionary of the Month

Creative Access Missionaries - Creative Access Countries

Creative access missionaries are those who are called of God to minister in countries where traditional mission methods are not accepted by the governments of those countries. As a result, there are other “creative” ways in which missionaries gain access to a country in order to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have never heard the message of salvation through Jesus. Creative access missionaries need our daily prayers for protection and wisdom in spreading the Good News of freedom in Christ.
