Oswald Chambers - "Never tolerate through sympathy with yourself or with others any practice that is not in keeping with a holy God. Holiness means unsullied walking with the feet, unsullied talking with the tongue, unsullied thinking with the mind - every detail of the life under the scrutiny of God. Holiness is not only what God gives me, but what I manifest that God has given me."

A.W. Tozer - "The true Church has never sounded out public expectations before launching her mission. Her leaders heard from God, they knew their Lord's will and did it. Their people followed them - sometimes to triumph, oftener to insults and public persecution - and their sufficient reward was the satisfaction of being right in a wrong world!"

James Boice - "We are not loved because we are lovable, for we are not. It is true that some of us may be lovable to some others of us, but this is only when we look at the matter from a human perspective. From God’s perspective there is nothing in us to make us even remotely desirable. He is holy; we are unholy. He is just; we are unjust. He is loving; we are filled with hatred and all forms of sin. In short, we are sinful and in willful rebellion against Him. Yet He loves us. In fact, so great a marvel is this that God even uses it to commend His love to us."

Adrian Rogers - "When you are surrendered to the will of God, focused on the Word of God, then the Holy Spirit begins to pray in you and through you. He energizes, motivates, and guides your prayer. One of the greatest lessons I've learned about prayer is this: the prayer that gets to Heaven is the prayer that starts in Heaven. Prayer is the Holy Spirit finding a desire in the heart of the Father, putting that desire in our heart, then sending it back to Heaven in the power of the cross. The prayer that gets to Heaven is the prayer that starts in Heaven. Our part is just to close the circuit."

Daily Disciples Ministries - "My dog Buddy is a consistent source of insight and amusement in my life. For you animal lovers, you know what I am talking about. . . . My husband and I had taken Buddy out to some property where deer and coyote roam freely. Buddy was quick to take off, running through weeds so high that all I could see is the white tip of his tail. He crawled through a barbed-wire fence, jumped over a creek, and dragged himself through thickets and brush that left him covered with briars. He was in heaven, loving every minute of his excursion, and without a care of any danger seemed to enter his mind. Later that evening when we got home, I heard Buddy whimpering outside near the back door. I thought he was hurt or that something was wrong with him. What was wrong? There was a twig lying on the concrete and he was afraid to step over it.

How often do we allow fear of something harmless to stop us in our tracks and keep us from going forward? How often does the Lord look at us and think we look ridiculous (as I did of Buddy)? We so often let the fear of the unknown keep us from having all that God has for us."

The Bible tells us that if seek the Lord with all of our heart we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). The keys are in truly seeking Him, waiting on Him, and obeying His words to us. Find a quiet place and commit to just spending that time with the Lord. Start with worshiping Him and coming before Him with an open heart. Keep seeking and keep knocking until you find that sweet place of fellowship. Remember that He is always here for us…we are the ones who get distracted and turn away from Him. John Piper - "From beginning to end, nothing in the Bible is more ultimate in the mind and heart of God than the glory of God--the beauty of God, the radiance of his manifold perfections. At every point in God's revealed action, wherever he makes plain the ultimate goal of that action, the goal is always the same: to uphold and display his glory. He predestined us for his glory; He created us for his glory; He elected Israel for his glory; He saved his people from Egypt for his glory; He rescued them from exile for his glory; He sent Christ into the world so that Gentiles would praise God for his glory; He commands his people, whether they eat or drink, to do all things for his glory; He will send Jesus a second time so that all the redeemed will marvel at his glory; Therefore, the mission of the church is: 'Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.'"

Albert Mohler, Jr. - "We are elect exiles (1 Peter 1:1). The temptation for evangelicals in America is to believe something else, and to feel ourselves very much at home. I think that many of the tensions in evangelicalism today are the tensions felt by a people who are just beginning to awaken to the fact that this culture just might not be the friendly place we thought it to be. All of our cultural optimism is coming into question as we begin to look at the deeper levels of what is happening all around us, and we are beginning to realize that there is no ground for such optimism.
We cannot simply withdraw. That would be to deny our commission. But we cannot feel at home either. That would be to deny our identity. We are a chosen race, by God's grace, a royal priesthood, and so our task is to preach and teach the gospel in this City of Man until we see that eschatological vision of believers, the elect from every tongue and tribe and people and nation, standing before the throne of God. In that day, we will not be Americans, or Pontians, or Romans, or Cappadocians. We will be his."

We have OSHA, and bumpers on our cars that are made to receive the impact and then return to normal. We are told to wear seat belts. We have a massive military and a police force. We have hospitals, and we think we are safe. We even extend this financially: we want to retire, we have investments, and we feel safe.

Albert Mohler, Jr. - "We have to understand that for Americans. . . it is normal to be told that the self is the center of the meaning system, and that the self is a project that they undertake throughout the entirety of their lives. As a result, most Americans believe that their major problem is something that has happened to them, and that their solution is to be found within. In other words, they believe that they have an alien problem that is to be resolved with an inner solution. What the gospel says, however, is that we have an inner problem that demands an alien solution--a righteousness that is not our own."

Oswald Chambers - "Will is the whole man active. I cannot give up my will, I must exercise it. I must will to obey, and I must will to receive God's Spirit. When God gives a vision of truth it is never a question of what He will do, but of what we will do. The Lord has been putting before us all some big propositions, and the best thing to do is to remember what you did when you were touched by God before - the time when you were saved, or first saw Jesus, or realized some truth. It was easy then to yield allegiance to God; recall those moments now as the Spirit of God brings before you some new proposition."

Does the gospel set free those who are downtrodden, and present the year of the Lord's favor to those who live under clouds of disdain? I understand that the good news is needed... [by those who live in comfort and joy with others just like themselves]. Yet, I worry that at times my gospel stays safely among friends, not venturing far beyond that... [comfort level]. Staying among those who 'speak well of me,' I rarely venture out to the Galilee of the Gentiles, where darkness is the great light and where good news is but a fading rumor. But it is in this world, far beyond a close circle of friends, where the good news truly is good news."

The elected officials started their session as they always did--with prayer--but the man who was asked to pray was Pastor Joe Wright. The provocative words of his prayer caused an uproar in the House. He prayed:

'Heavenly Father, we come before You today to ask Your forgiveness and seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that's exactly what we've done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and we have inverted our values.

We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it moral pluralism, and worshiped other gods and called it multiculturalism. We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery, and neglected the needy and called it self-preservation.

We have killed our unborn and called it choice, and shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem, and abused power and called it political savvy. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition, and polluted the airwaves with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some wicked way in us. Cleanse us from every sin and set us free.

Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent here by the people of Kansas and have been ordained by You to govern this great state. Grant them Your wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of Your will. I ask it in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.'"

Elisabeth Elliot - ""A sensitive, timid little boy, long years ago, was accustomed to lie down to sleep in a low 'trundle-bed,' which was rolled under his parents' bed by day and was brought out for his use by night. As he lay there by himself in the darkness, he could hear the voices of his parents, in their lighted sitting-room across the hallway, on the other side of the house. It seemed to him that his parents never slept; for he left them awake when he was put to bed at night, and he found them awake when he left his bed in the morning. So far this thought was a cause of cheer to him, as his mind was busy with imaginings in the weird darkness of his lonely room.

"After loving good-night words and kisses had been given him by both his parents, and he had nestled down to rest, this little boy was accustomed, night after night, to rouse up once more, and to call out from his trundle-bed to his strong-armed father, in the room from which the light gleamed out, beyond the shadowy hallway, 'Are you there, papa?' And the answer would come back cheerily, 'Yes, my child, I am here.' 'You'll take care of me tonight, papa, won't you?' was then the question. 'Yes, I'll take care of you, my child,' was the comforting response. 'Go to sleep now. Good night.' And the little fellow would fall asleep restfully, in the thought of those assuring good-night words.

"A little matter that was to the loving father; but it was a great matter to the sensitive son. It helped to shape the son's life. It gave the father an added hold on him; and it opened up the way for his clearer understanding of his dependence on the loving watchfulness of the All-Father. And to this day when that son, himself a father and a grandfather, lies down to sleep at night, he is accustomed, out of the memories of that lesson of long ago, to look up through the shadows of his earthly sleeping place into the far-off light of his Father's presence, and to call out, in the same spirit of childlike trust and helplessness as so long ago, 'Father, you'll take care of me tonight, won't you?' And he hears the assuring answer come back, 'He that keepeth thee will not slumber. The Lord shall keep thee from all evil. He shall keep thy soul. Sleep, my child, in peace.' And so he realizes the twofold blessing of a father's goodnight words.""

Jill Carattini - "C.S. Lewis writes in Mere Christianity, "People often think of Christian morality as a kind of bargain in which God says, 'If you keep a lot of rules I'll reward you, and if you don't I'll do the other thing.'[...] I would much rather say that every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before." In other words, the decisions we make that define our integrity simultaneously define--and refine--us. Such a description posits a perspective similar to the psalmist's on choosing the laws of God. Singing of these laws, the psalmist describes something less like a proper collection of do's and don'ts and more like the choosing of light and life--things we can claim and foster, and by which find ourselves changed by the one who first called light into existence. Writes the psalmist, "The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes" (19:7-8). Whatever the choices we make, we are left differently than we were before."

Tim Wesemann - "Is it unfortunate that we hear about acts of kindness only after those who've done them die? Not necessarily. Jesus himself served anonymously much of the time. He did it without announcing it or seeking publicity for it. Instead, he acted from a heart of self-forgetful love. And he taught his followers to do the same."

Tim Wesemann - "Our Lord graciously gives us strength and renews it daily by means of his forgiveness, promises, and presence. He gives this strength freely, and he's not stingy about it! Empowered, we soar! When we realize this and count on it, we will be surprised at what we can and will do to fulfill our life's purpose in honor of the One who has given us new life, eternal life."

A.B. Simpson - "A friend. . . Said, "You were healed by faith." "Oh, no," I said, "I was healed by Christ." What is the difference? There is a great difference. There came a time when even faith seemed to come between me and Jesus. I thought I should have to work up the faith, so I labored to get the faith. At last I thought I had it; that if I put my whole weight upon it, it would hold. I said, when I thought I had got the faith, "Heal me." I was trusting in myself, in my own heart, in my own faith. I was asking the Lord to do something for me because of something in me, not because of something in Him. "

Elisabeth Elliot - "We sometimes imagine that God must eventually "sit us down" and "explain" his mysterious ways to our satisfaction. Let us suppose we have never seen a skyscraper. We discover a whole city block surrounded by a board fence. Finding a knothole, we peer inside. Huge earth movers are at work; hundreds of men in hard hats are busy at mysterious tasks; cranes are being moved into place; truckloads of pipes and cement are being unloaded. What on earth is happening? There is nobody around to answer our questions. If we wait long enough, nobody will need to. When we see the finished building, all the incomprehensible activity becomes comprehensible. "Oh! So this is what that was for." ("I shall be satisfied when I awake, with Thy likeness" (Ps 17: 15 AV))"

Elisabeth Elliot - "It is not for the flock of sheep to know the pasture the Shepherd has in mind. It is for them simply to follow Him. If they knew that his plans included a valley of deep shadow, they would panic. Keeping close to the one they have learned to trust is all that is necessary. He will faithfully provide rest, refreshment, correction, and protection as the needs arise. His accompanying presence is guaranteed, all the way--even through the darkest shadows--to the house of the Lord."

Dave or Debbie Bochman - "God’s name (or character) is for us. . . a strong tower. In that strong tower, we can see things from God's perspective rather than from the perspective of our culture or our family. . . . No longer do we need to fear, because He is our Peace. No longer do we need to worry, because He is our Provider. For our sickness, He is our Healer. When we think we are forgotten, He is the God who sees. When we need a hug, He is our Abba. We begin to see things as God sees them. When we run into this tower (where we are wrapped in the names of God), we are safe. Nothing can touch us because we are His. He calls us His own, and He delights in us."

Selah Subscriber - "Near one of the olive trees in Gethsemane one of the Darmstadt Sisters of Mary has put up a small plaque: "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, nevertheless not as I will but as thou wilt. Thou, O Jesus, in the darkness of night and grief didst utter these words of surrender and trust to God the Father. In gratitude and love I will, in my hours of fear and desolation, say after thee, My Father, I cannot understand what thou art about but in thee do I put my trust.""

Ravi Zacharias - "Israel's sacrifices were not the same as blood shed by those attempting to appease the many gods they feared and followed. The prophets sent throughout Israel's history were forever insisting that what God was commanding was something far more than the empty performance of sacrifice. God wanted sacrifices offered with hearts of worship, lives yearning to be in the presence of their creator, though recognizing the fear of such an act. The God of Israel wanted to be near his chosen people, and God made them a way, through the blood of a lamb. . . [the Lamb of God]."

Ravi Zacharias - "Ralph Wood, professor of theology and literature at Baylor University, once asked a group of seminary students to compare two individuals: the modern, astute collegian who insists that sin and the fall of humanity are fallacies invented by the superstitious, and a primitive young man in a remote village whom you find in the woods sacrificing a chicken on a makeshift altar. "Which man is farther from the truth?" he asked. The students hemmed and hawed but hesitantly agreed that the pagan boy, however crudely, understood something the other did not. There is a need in our lives for atonement. There is a need for blood. We have within us a basic sense of our desperate condition. (ed: Jesus provided atonement for our sins - Hallelujah! And He offers it to us as a free gift!)"

Elisabeth Elliot - "The work of heavy highway equipment is to smooth the way for travelers by exalting valleys, making low the mountains and hills, straightening the crooked. Obstacles--trees, rocks, houses, even mountains themselves--are put out of the way. This is what the Lord can do for his travelers, but He does it without fuss, and in response to the one who simply thinks of Him: "Think of Him in all your ways, and He will smooth your path" (Proverbs 3:6 NEB). The mind can build barriers, produce huge obstacles, collide with boulders of impossibility. Strangely and wonderfully, when we turn our thoughts to Him with whom nothing is an impossibility (and to turn thoughts takes an act of will), He smooths the path for us. We find it possible, maybe even easy, to move forward. Don't waste time, energy, perhaps sleep-time, thinking of all those rocks in the way. Think of Him. Think of Him! You may find your path suddenly smoothed."

Thomas a Kempis - "When the grace of God comes to a man he can do all things, but when it leaves him he becomes poor and weak, abandoned, as it were, to affliction. Yet, in this condition he should not become dejected or despair. On the contrary, he should calmly await the will of God and bear whatever befalls him in praise of Jesus Christ, for after winter comes summer, after night, the day, and after the storm, a great calm."

Thomas a Kempis - "You will quickly be deceived if you look only to the outward appearance of men, and you will often be disappointed if you seek comfort and gain in them. If, however, you seek Jesus in all things, you will surely find Him. Likewise, if you seek yourself, you will find yourself — to your own ruin. For the man who does not seek Jesus does himself much greater harm than the whole world and all his enemies could ever do."

Thomas a Kempis - "Be not troubled about those who are with you or against you, but take care that God be with you in everything you do. Keep your conscience clear and God will protect you, for the malice of man cannot harm one whom God wishes to help. If you know how to suffer in silence, you will undoubtedly experience God’s help. He knows when and how to deliver you; therefore, place yourself in His hands, for it is a divine prerogative to help men and free them from all distress."

Thomas a Kempis - "It is good for us to have trials and troubles at times, for they often remind us that we are on probation and ought not to hope in any worldly thing. It is good for us sometimes to suffer contradiction, to be misjudged by men even though we do well and mean well. These things help us to be humble and shield us from vainglory. When to all outward appearances men give us no credit, when they do not think well of us, then we are more inclined to seek God Who sees our hearts. Therefore, a man ought to root himself so firmly in God that he will not need the consolations of men."

Missionary of the Month

The Garry Barkman Family - The Philippines

After getting his training at Moody Aviation in Elizabethton, TN, Garry took a wife and travelled to Venezuela where he flew as a missionary pilot with for New Tribes Missions. In the summer of 2000, they were transferred to Paraguay.

In February 2006 Garry and Cynthia moved their family and the aviation program to a new location in the Philippines where their co-workers and a newly-constructed hangar awaited them. God is at work in the Barkman family and we are glad that we have had a relationship with them in their training.
